Scientific Management Meaning


Scientific management means the application of scientific methods of study analysis to the problems of management. It is a systematic and thoughtful approach to the job of management as compared to the rule of thumb or trial and error. It is concerned with the scientific bent of mind and is more than merely a set of techniques for improving efficiency.

Scientific management was developed and introduced by F.W. Taylor in 1910.


Principles of Scientific Management


Taylor's four principles are as follows:

Replace working by "rule of thumb," or simple habit and customary sense, and instead use the methodology to review work and determine the foremost efficient thanks to perform specific tasks.

Rather than simply assign workers to only any job, match workers to their jobs supported capability and motivation, and train them to figure at maximum efficiency.

Monitor worker performance, and supply instructions and supervision to make sure that they are using the foremost efficient ways of working.


Allocate the work between managers and workers in order that the managers spend their time planning and training, allowing the workers to perform their tasks efficiently.
