Symbols of Our Rich Heritage


1. Ajanta Caves are a group of 29 caves near Aurangabad in Maharashtra contain paintings made by Buddhist monks about 2000 years ago. The paintings cover two major themes
(i) the life of the Buddha and 
(ii) illustrations of tales from Buddhist fables or jatakas.

2. Dilwara Temples are Five Jain Temples near Mt. Abu in Rajasthan built between 11th and 13th century. Vimal Vasahi is the most famous of these temples.

3. Gol Gumbaz is dome-shaped mausoleum of Mohammad Adil Shah in Bijapur, Karnataka built in 1656, the second largest dome in the world, has a remarkable echoing effect.

4. Golden Temple is a temple in Amritsar, Punjab the holiest of the Sikh shrines built in 1577 part of the exterior covered with gold leaf stands amidst a sacred tank.

5. Belur Math is the headquarters of Ramakrishna Mission in Kolkata founded by Swami Vivekananda.

6. Basilica of Bom Jesus is a church at Velha, Goa built in the seventeenth century houses the mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier.

7. Ellora Caves are a group of 34 Caves near Aurangabad in Maharashtra. In Cave no. 16 is the Kailash Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, carved out of a single rock.

8. Hazratbal Mosque in Kashmir made of white marble very sacred to the muslims for a hair of prophet Muhammad is preserved here.

9. Shaking Minarets are two Minarets in Sidi Bashir's mosque in Ahmedabad, Gujarat built in the 10th century an architectural marvel. If one minaret is shaken, other shakens too.

10. Somnath Temple located on the southern trip of the Saurashtra Peninsula in Gujarat destroyed several times for its enormous wealth and rebuilt the present temple was built after Independence.

Pioneers


1. Ved Vyasa name means compiler. He is the one who compiler and classified the Vedas. He wrote the Mahabharata and is also a character in it. He also wrote the Puranas. The festival of Guru Purnima is dedicated to him.

2. Valmiki was a great Sanskrit poet. The epic Ramayana is attributed to him. He is also an important character in the epic.

3. Kalidasa was great Sanskrit poet and dramatist who lived in the 4th century B.C.E during the reign of Chandragupta Vikramaditya. Abhijnana Shakuntalam and Meghduta are two of his famous works.

4. Aryabhata was the first major mathematician-astronomer of India, he lived from 476 C.E 550 C.E. He explained lunar and solar eclipses and asserted that the earth rotated on its axis causing day and night. He also calculated the value of π (pi) correct to four decimal places.

5. Brahmagupta lived from 598 C.E to 670 C.E. He is believed to have introduced the concept of zero into arithmetic.

6. Charaka is recognised as the father of the ancient system of medicine--Ayurveda; lived sometime during the 2nd century B.C.E. and 1st century Century C.E.

7. Sushruta wrote Sushruta, which includes surgical training instruments and procedures. He is also supposed to be the first plastic surgeon. Most probably, he belonged to the 6th century B.C.E.

Indian Handicrafts


1. Zardozi Embroidery with gold thread; gained popularity in the 17th century during the reign of Akbar.

2. Kalamkari is a type of hand painted or block- printed cotton textile produced in parts of India and Iran.

3. Chikankari is a traditional embroidery style; Lucknow is the heart of this industry today.

4. Phulkari literally means flower work. Very popular in Punjab.

5. Meenakari is the art of making designs on a metal by fusing different minerals over it. Popular in Jaipur.

6. Terracotta word means' baked earth'. It is the art of making sculptures using glazed or unglazed ceramic.

7. Tarakasi is a from of filigree work from Cuttack in Odisha.

8. Madhubani painting Practised in Bihar, this kind of painting is done with fingers, twigs and brushes, using natural dyes and characterised by attractive geometrical patterns.

Marvels of the World


1. Great Wall of China is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. It was built by Emperor Qin Shi Huang to protect his empire from the Huns.

5. Burj Khalifa at 828 m, this 200-storey tower with over 160 habitable storeys, is currently the tallest building in the world. It is situated in Dubai and offers a stunning view of the area around it. It was thrown open to public in 2010.

6. Sydney Opera House is multi-venue performing arts centre in Sydney, Australia. It is recognised as one of the twentieth century's most distinctive buildings. Along with the Harbour Bridge, it makes a truly iconic scene. Opened to public in 1973.

7. This bridge, that opened in 1988, connects the four main and numerous small islands of Japan by rail. It is 13 km long and took about 40 years to build. It is specially designed to withstand earthquakes this area is notorious for Seto Ohashi Bridge.

8. Potala Palace situated in Lhasa, Tibet, this place was the chief residence of the Dalai Lamas, until the 14th Dalai Lama fled to India during the 1959 Tibet turmoil. It is a beautiful landmark overlooking the city. It is now a museum and a world Heritage site.
